As more people choose to live and work in South Jordan, the City is committed to exploring various solutions to address traffic congestion and infrastructure demands. Among these solutions, transit and active transportation play vital roles in meeting the City’s transportation needs.
Transit
Transit includes public transportation such as TRAX, bus routes, or Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA’s) services. One significant development is the addition of a third TRAX stop in South Jordan, expected to be completed by spring 2025. This new stop, situated between the South Jordan Parkway and Daybreak Parkway Stations, will serve the new urban center, including the ballpark, retail areas, and housing in the area.
The UTA is conducting several transit studies, including a comprehensive review of transit services in the south end of Salt Lake County. Another study focuses on bus transit along 5600 W. (Grandville Avenue). South Jordan actively participates in these discussions to ensure that the City’s interests are represented.
Active Transportation
South Jordan is currently updating its Transportation Master Plan, which includes an Active Transportation Plan. This plan emphasizes the development of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure to encourage alternative modes of transportation.
As part of the Regional Transportation Plan, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has proposed the expansion of 11400 South, incorporating protected bike lanes. These lanes would provide a safer and more practical route for cyclists traveling east-west through South Jordan. Additionally, South Jordan is studying solutions to make Shields Lane more bicycle and pedestrian friendly.
The Importance of Options
The availability of both transit and active transportation options offers residents and visitors greater flexibility in how they navigate the city and the surrounding areas. This diversity in transportation modes promotes equity by ensuring that everyone has access to essential services and recreational opportunities, regardless of vehicle ownership.
Furthermore, transit systems are highly efficient at moving large numbers of people, thereby reducing congestion on roadways and mitigating the environmental impact of vehicle emissions. By investing in transit and active transportation infrastructure, South Jordan aims to create a more sustainable and accessible community for all its residents.
South Jordan’s commitment to exploring transit and active transportation solutions reflects its proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by growth. By prioritizing these initiatives, the City strives to enhance mobility, reduce congestion, and foster a healthier environment for current and future generations.
