[ARCHIVED] The Road Ahead: Infrastructure, Housing, and Sustainability

As city manager, it is both an honor and a privilege to serve the community of South Jordan in implementing the vision and policies of the mayor and city council. I am excited about the future of our community as our team continues to work on enhancing our public infrastructure, developing our economic vitality, adding desirable amenities, and improving the overall quality of life for our residents so that our city remains the community of choice in the Salt Lake Valley.

The questions residents ask me the most include, “What is the City doing about growth?”, “What is the plan for transportation?”, and “What is the City doing about affordable housing?” These are important questions for the many people choosing to live in our community.

We live in the heart of a complex and connected urban environment, and how we travel from one place to another is foundational to how we live our lives. Whether you use public transit, a personal vehicle, bike, or other modes, we need a viable transportation infrastructure network. No matter where life takes you–commuting to work, shuttling kids, visiting friends, or grabbing groceries–we all deserve to travel safely and efficiently.

We have been working to ensure that our transportation needs will be met now and into the future. A new UTA TRAX station will be opening in early 2025 to help people travel to the new baseball stadium and to the recently announced performing arts center that will soon be under construction along with many other exciting destinations in the new downtown area. UDOT will also soon start the next phase of construction on the Mountain View Corridor to enhance north/south movement on the valley’s west side. Studies are underway to explore alternative ways to travel (biking, walking, etc.) along the 9800 South corridor.

While there are many places to live, few offer such a great blend of clean, safe neighborhoods like those found in our community. The City continues to look for ways to address affordable housing concerns and is working with all stakeholders, including legislators, developers, non-profits, builders, and potential future homeowners, to find solutions to this complex challenge that we currently face.

Continued growth requires innovative solutions for providing water, including maintaining an effective water conservation program and developing future water supply projects like Pure SoJo. By partnering with all City water users, we can ensure a stable future for our water supply.

In just a short time, you will receive our 2024 Annual Report, which highlights some of the accomplishments over the last year in South Jordan. I hope that you will take a moment to look through this report. You will see many of the good things that have occurred and the exciting prospects for the future. We have laid the groundwork for future projects that will shape the City for years to come, and I am excited about the good things happening here.
