Prepare Your Family for an Earthquake!
Did you know Utah is earthquake country? Most of us live in areas where a big quake could happen, and being prepared can make all the difference. That’s why we’re encouraging all South Jordan families, businesses, and organizations to take part in the Great Utah ShakeOut on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 10:15 a.m.
This statewide earthquake drill is a chance for you, your family, and even your workplace or school to practice what to do if the ground starts shaking.
How to Participate
It’s simple! Here’s what you can do to get ready:
- Sign Up – Visit ShakeOut.org/Utah to register. You’ll get reminders and resources to help make the drill more effective.
- Practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”– When the drill starts at 10:15 a.m., everyone should:
- Drop to your hands and knees.
- Cover your head and neck (and get under a sturdy table if possible).
- Hold On until the shaking stops.
- Talk About It – Use this as a chance to make an emergency plan. Where will your family meet after an earthquake? Do you have enough food, water, and supplies?
- Make It Fun! – If you have kids, turn it into a game. Let them find safe spots in your home or practice a pretend earthquake with stuffed animals.
Why It’s Important
Earthquakes can happen with no warning, and knowing what to do ahead of time can help keep your family safe. Practicing together makes it easier to react quickly and calmly when it really matters.
Mark your calendar for April 17 at 10:15 a.m. and join thousands of Utahns in the ShakeOut! The more we practice, the safer we’ll be. Visit ShakeOut.org to learn more!
