[ARCHIVED] Discover the History & Community Pride at the South Jordan Cemetery

Cemetery Family Vault in the Golden sunlight with summer flowers

Nestled in the heart of South Jordan, the South Jordan Cemetery is an embodiment of history and heritage that not only honors our past but invites us to connect with our roots, celebrate community pride, and contemplate life’s profound journey.

The beginnings of the South Jordan Cemetery trace back to the generosity of an early settler, James Oliver, who donated the land for this rural resting place. The cemetery’s history dates back to September 9, 1863, when two-month-old John A. Bills was the first to be buried on the grounds. The passage of time brought changes, and the South Jordan Ward initially cared for the cemetery until its stewardship was entrusted to the City of South Jordan on October 1, 1945.

Today, the cemetery stands as a place of somber reflection as well as a living testament to the sacrifices and triumphs that have shaped South Jordan. The Veterans Memorial serves as an inspiring tribute to those who have defended our nation. Every year, names are engraved on the monument around Memorial Day, reinforcing the link between generations, service, and honor.

People visit daily, seeking a connection to their past and a moment of reprieve from the bustling world.

Adding a modern touch to the cemetery is the pavilion within the cremation garden. This pavilion offers a place for introspection, and it’s now available for reservation by calling the city. In the near future, its functionality will be further enhanced with the addition of tables, transforming it into a space for community gatherings.

The cemetery caretakers are making improvements that honor the past while embracing the future. Roads are being repaved, older sections are being re-seeded, and the sprinkler system is being adjusted for more efficient watering. These enhancements are not just about maintenance; they reflect a dedication to preserving the sanctuary’s serenity for generations to come.

Those looking for more information or to purchase a space for themselves or their family should contact the city and schedule an appointment with the cemetery sexton, Matt Doane, to explore possibilities, gain insight, and discuss future plans. Whether your connection to South Jordan spans generations or has just begun, the cemetery’s enduring presence offers a chance to explore the town’s history.

Call our Cemetery Sexton, Matt Doane at 801-446-4357, to set up an appointment, or view more information, list of availability, a cemetery map, and more
