South Jordan Prioritizes Safety After Gas Explosion

South Jordan, Utah – November 12, 2024 – The City of South Jordan continues to prioritize neighborhood safety and support for the community following the November 6 explosion at 10593 S. 3210 W. The natural gas explosion led to a 2-alarm fire, tragically claiming the life of a 15-year-old resident. The affected area has since been cleared, with inspections ensuring the safety of surrounding homes and residents.

As part of the ongoing commitment to community safety, the city encourages residents to consider purchasing a combustible gas leak detector—a new technology designed to help identify gas leaks early and provide an extra layer of security.

“These detectors can provide an added layer of safety for families,” said South Jordan Fire Chief Chris Dawson. “The city is doing everything possible to keep our neighborhoods safe, and we encourage residents to take proactive measures to protect their homes.”

The City of South Jordan wishes to extend sincere gratitude to the many agencies and organizations that provided critical support during and after the incident. Thanks to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for leading the investigation and to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) for their assistance. Fire crews from across the Salt Lake Valley worked tirelessly to contain the fire, and the Red Cross graciously provided food for firefighters on the scene. Special thanks also go to the Jordan School District for offering counseling resources to students, family members, and others affected by this tragic loss.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene on November 6 at approximately 3 p.m., evacuating nearby homes as a precaution. The NTSB is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the gas leak, with preliminary findings expected within 30 days.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and to contact their gas utility provider or their fire department immediately if they suspect a leak in their home.
