SOUTH JORDAN, UT – July 1, 2022— With much of the State being in extreme drought, the South Jordan Fire Department is taking steps to reduce the threat of fireworks-caused fires in our community by going door-to-door in the highest-risk areas to educate residents about fireworks safety.

“We will be working with our residents who live adjacent to our wildland-urban interface areas,” said South Jordan Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner. “The goal is to provide information and resources to create defensible space in the event of a wildfire.”

South Jordan has several areas that are considered higher risk because of the wildland-urban interface, one of which is the Bingham Creek area where they will be doing the outreach campaign.

“We anticipate another hot and dry summer and the South Jordan Fire Department is focused on fire prevention in key areas within the City,” Chief Lessner said.

As part of the fuel mitigation and risk reduction plan, the Fire Department has partnered with the volunteer organization Team Rubicon to assist with the removal of overgrown vegetation.

This partnership will provide fuel mitigation on South Jordan City property and provide residents with an opportunity to remove overgrown vegetation to create defensible space in the event of a wildland fire.

“South Jordan Firefighters are well trained and prepared to respond to any emergency within the community,” said Chief Lessner. “With the increased fire danger we are asking our residents to help ensure their property is fire safe and to develop an emergency plan in the event of a wildland fire.”
